Top 10 Zombie Games 2013
2013 is going to be a big year for the Zombie genre. We have Dead Island Riptide, DayZ standalone, The War Z & of course State of Decay! The Dead Linger is also worth a shout, although in very early alpha, it looks very promising. 2013 is definitely going to take open-world zombie survival games to a whole new level.
Gamers alike are obsessed with shooting the brains out of zombies, so If your a lover of zombie games, be sure to check out these top zombie games which must play, as well as those releasing this year!
Here is a list of the Top 10 Zombies Games 2013 that you have to play! The majority will be releasing in 2013, however I have included some which have already been released as I feel they are zombie games you have to play!
State of Decay
State of Decay is an open world zombie survival game and will be released on Xbox Live arcade before coming to PC. It will be a first game of its kind allowing players to live out a zombie apocalypse and try to survive as long as possible. There is a huge emphasis on meeting NPC Survivors and forming your own group. While more traditional zombie games put the focus on killing as many zeds as possible and making it through the level, State of Decay will focus on survival, base building and exploring the open world. The choices that the player makes out in the world will have a positive or negative effect on the survivors and the world.
A big aspect of State of Decay, and what I feel will make it a great game, is the focus on base-building and having your own community. There are a number of different locations in the world where you can build your base, however you can only have one base at any given time. But you can build outposts in any building which you can enter, allowing you to store items and rest. You can build up the doors and windows of such a building. There is a nice variety of different buildings you can have in your base which include watch towers, gardens, sleeping quarters, kitchens, workshops, medical bays and barricades.
The Last of US
The Last of Us is a 3rd Person Survival-Horror Action game developed by Naughty Dog and will be released solely on the PS3. The game focuses on two survivors, Joel and Ellie as they trek across a post-apocalyptic United States trying to escape the quarantine zone and avoid capture from the Government and the threat from the Infected.
The game takes place 20 Years after a mysterious fungus has killed millions of people, during which nature has gradually began retaking the abandoned cities and towns. The player plays as Joel, who made a promise to an friend that he will get a young, fourteen year old girl named Ellie out of the quarantine zone and to safety. They face threats from 3 different sources, the infected who wish to spread the fungus, other survivors who are hostile and will stop at no where to get what they want as well as the Government who are constantly on their trail.
The Last of Us will release June 14.
Dead Island: Riptide
Dead Island is an open-world action RPG Zombie game and continues the story where Dead Island left off. However after escaping Banoi, the survivors find themselves trapped on the overrun island of Palanai after a sudden storm and the spread of the virus ravaged their ship. Dead Island: Riptide features new characters, new vehicles, weather conditions, new levels and HUB defense mechanics.
As with the previous Dead Island, you will encounter a wide range of zombies who will pose different challenges to the player with more weapons on offer to take down the undead in your effort to once again reach safety.
DayZ Mod/Standalone
DayZ is another open world zombie survival game, except its a mod for the realistic combat simulator Arma II. While currently just a mod, a Standalone version is currently in development by Rocket and his team.
The map, Chernarus is 225km2, is littered with small villages and big towns throughout the map, ideal for looting and meeting fellow survivors.
The survival aspect of DayZ is also more realistic than that in The War Z. In DayZ you can kill and skin wild animals for food, and then cook it in order to be eat that food. This adds another aspect to the mod completely. While both games feature a thirst and hunger meter, DayZ also requires you to keep your body temperature at a sustainable level and features a blood meter.
In order to play the DayZ mod, you need to have both Arma II and Arma II: Operation Arrowhead. These are both available in the Combined Operations package at a reasonable price. Arma II is a great game even without DayZ, I fully suggest checking out both Arma II and DayZ.
The War Z
What is The War Z? Well it is an Open World Zombie Survival MMO and is developed by Hammerpoint Interactive.
The setting of the game takes place 5 years after a zombie apocalypse which has wiped out the majority of mankind. You create a character and therefore try to survive in this harsh environment. The zombies aren’t your biggest threat, The biggest threat are other players, most of whom tend to be very unfriendly. So keep your wits about you. You have to watch out that you don’t get toxicity in your blood from being struck by a zombie, otherwise you could be joining them.
The only map currently available is Colorado. However the Development team have said that more maps are in the pipeline. The size of the Colorado map has been stated as being roughly 100km2. There are 2 major cities, with lots of smaller towns scattered throughout the map.
Recently, Punkbuster was added to the game in an attempt to crack down on the major hacking issue, so now may be a good time to look at joining the game if you are interested.
7 Days to Die
7 Days to Die is an Open-World Sandbox Zombie Survival Crafting Game. The game takes place in 2034 Arizona, where nuclear attacks have decimated the Earth and the remaining inhabitants of Earth have become infected. The game gets its name from the fact that the this virus takes 7 days to kill the infected before they turn into the living dead.
A lot of care has gone into the world, with its modern, beautiful, fully destroyable, fully buildable, fully dynamic, hand crafted without doubt one of its most appealing features
ZombiU
ZombiU is a first-person survival game is set in modern day London. It was a launch title for the Wii U is only available on this platform. Through out the world there is a variety of weapons and items to be collected to help you better survive the apocalypse. You start the game as a survivor in a bunker who has been chosen to confront the zombies,and must try to survive through the apocalypse.
A feature of ZombiU is that if your character gets killed, which can be from just a single bite, your character is dead permanently. Therefore you must create a new character and start again. Your previous character then becomes a Zombie which you can kill to get your stuff back. The Wii U game pad acts as your bug out bag, housing your tools, inventory, maps, first aid and more,which immerses you even more in the game world.
Weapon crafting is also available allowing you to upgrade, tweak and customise your guns and gear. Spray paint allows you to leave messages on the walls for the other players, Precision sniping takes advantage of the game pad by using it as your scope. You can even hack doors or use sonar to scan your surroundings.
Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
Undead Nightmare is an expansion for Red Dead Redemption. However there is a standalone disc which doesn’t require you to have Red Dead Redemption in order to play. So it is a game rather than DLC in its own right.
It features its own campaign where you have to try to find out what has happened and find a cure. As well as this, you have to help defend each town before they become overrun by the undead, constantly giving you something to do.
What’s better than cowboy’s versus zombies in a massive open-world environment? This means you can ride around and have your own fun when not taking part in missions. There are a variety of side missions as well as trigger events. For example, as you are travelling the world you will come across other survivors who need your help to fight off zombies, or go out on rescue missions and attempt to rescue and bring back missing persons. There is also a mission which involves killing sasquatch!
This is one of the best zombie games/DLC I have played.
The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is a point and click adventure game based on the comic book series. The game is set in the same world as the comic.
In the game you play as Lee Everett where you must work with a bunch of survivors in order to stay alive. The game play during the game involves examining and interacting with various objects and making use of inventory items. There is also the ability to interact with the surroundings, with options appearing on screen determining what action is possible. There are also parts of the game which require timed responses which often has an impact on the storyline.
The Walking Dead is focused more on developing characters and telling the story, than the more action based approach with other zombie games such as Dead Island and Left 4 Dead.
Left 4 Dead 2
Left 4 Dead 2 is the sequel to the original Left 4 Dead. There are 4 new playable survivors. 5 different campaigns are also available. Melee weapons and new special infected are also included.
As in the original Left 4 Dead, they are four different game modes to play. These are campaign – both single player and co-op, versus, survival and a new game mode called Scavenge which requires the Survivor players to collect and use as many fuel cans scattered about a level to fill up a power generator, while the Infected players attempt to stop them.
If you enjoyed Left 4 Dead, or just want a good objective based zombie game, then Left 4 Dead 2 is the game for you.
